They say all dogs go to heaven, and if that’s true, then Milwaukee Brewers legend Hank is surely there. On Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers shared the sad news that Hank, affectionately known as “The Ballpark Pup,” passed away earlier that day.
Despite his small size, Hank made a major league impact on the team and its fans. His story began in February 2014, when he wandered into the Brewers’ spring training facility in Arizona as a scruffy stray, sporting a tire mark on his fur and an injured tail. The Brewers, coming off a tough 2013 season, were in need of a morale boost, and Hank delivered just that. The team quickly adopted him, giving him the love and care he needed.
For the rest of spring training, Hank became a regular at the Brewers’ complex. He joined the team on the field, participated in workouts, and met with fans. Hank's presence brought a sense of joy and positivity to a team that needed it, and soon, he became an internet sensation. Named after the legendary Hank Aaron, Hank's story captivated fans across the country. His charming personality and adorable appearance landed him spots on national television, including features by People magazine.
Upon Hank’s arrival in Milwaukee, the city welcomed him with open arms. Then-Mayor Tom Barrett, former Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, Brewers executives, and hundreds of eager fans gathered to meet the furry new star. Hank found a loving forever home with Marti Wronski, the Brewers’ Chief Operating Officer, and her family. “Hank was truly loved by our family, and we are so grateful for the ten years we had with him,” Wronski said in a statement. “We are heartbroken to be without him but are grateful for the joy he brought to so many and the spotlight he helped shine on animal rescue.”
Hank made his debut at Miller Park in March 2014, drawing hundreds of fans who arrived as early as 4:30 a.m. for a chance to meet him. Journal Sentinel columnist Jim Stingl captured the moment, describing how fans cooed over Hank and took photos with the beloved pup.
During his heyday, Hank became the face of Brewers merchandise, including bobbleheads, T-shirts, plush toys, and bumper stickers. Six-thousand Hank plushies sold out within weeks, and his popularity helped the Brewers raise money for local charities, including the Wisconsin Humane Society.
In 2015, Hank's fame reached new heights when he was named “Dog of the Year” at the CW Network's World Dog Awards in Los Angeles. Rick Schlesinger, Brewers President of Business Operations, reflected on Hank’s impact, saying, “We thought it would be a 20-minute story on social media. The power of Hank is incredible.”
As Hank got older, he faded out of the spotlight to enjoy the peaceful life of a family pet. Though he still made occasional appearances, the Brewers ensured that Hank lived a comfortable and loved life. In 2018, Brewers Vice President of Communications Tyler Barnes confirmed that Hank was living happily at home and “deserves to live the life of a loved pet.”
For those wishing to honor Hank’s memory, the Brewers and the Wronski family encourage donations to the Wisconsin Humane Society or the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC).
Hank’s legacy as the Brewers’ ballpark pup will live on in the hearts of fans, both in Milwaukee and beyond. He was more than just a dog—he was a symbol of hope, joy, and the power of animal rescue. Hank may be gone, but his spirit will forever be a part of the Brewers family.
