Dallas, TX – A devastating fire erupted at a Northwest Dallas shopping center on Friday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of 579 animals and significant damage to the Plaza Latina Bazaar located on Harry Hines Boulevard. The shopping complex, a staple in the community for over 25 years, faced a severe two-alarm fire that began around 9 a.m., with nearly 50 firefighters working tirelessly to control the blaze.

Majority of Animals Perish from Smoke Inhalation

The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department reported that most of the 579 animals lost their lives due to smoke inhalation. The animals were housed in an exotic pet store within the plaza, and the casualties included primarily small birds, along with chickens, hamsters, two dogs, and two cats.

“No exotic animals were found on the site at the time of recovery,” stated Robert Borse, spokesperson for Dallas Fire-Rescue.

Despite the fire not directly reaching the pet store, thick smoke infiltrated the building, creating lethal conditions for the animals inside. Firefighters made valiant efforts to rescue the animals, but the overwhelming smoke made survival impossible for the majority.

Heroic Efforts Lead to Some Rescues

Amid the tragedy, a few animals were successfully rescued and revived thanks to the swift actions of Dallas Fire-Rescue teams. Firefighters administered CPR to a tortoise and a near-death puppy, and also saved miniature pigs, guinea pigs, and rabbits.

“I’m an animal lover, so I tried to think about them,” shared Jasmine Sanchez, whose mother owns a clothing store at Plaza Latina. “God uses people, and I just thought about them. I’m happy for the ones that made it, but I’m really sad for the ones who died.”

Exclusive Footage Highlights Rescue Operations

Footage captured by local photojournalists showcases the intense rescue operations, including firefighters performing mouth-to-snout resuscitation on a puppy, successfully bringing it back to life. These heroic measures underscore the dedication and compassion of the first responders involved.

Survivors Now Under Care

Nearly two dozen animals that survived the fire are currently being cared for by Dallas Animal Services. The organization is providing necessary medical attention and support to ensure their well-being during this difficult time.

Impact on Local Businesses and Community

The Plaza Latina Bazaar housed multiple small businesses, many of which have been part of the complex for over two decades. The partial collapse of the roof has left several storefronts inaccessible, and business owners are planning to assess the damage on Saturday. The loss of life and property has deeply affected the local community, with residents and business owners expressing their sorrow and support for those impacted by the fire.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Steps

Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the fire. As of now, no human injuries have been reported. Local officials are working to provide updates and support to affected businesses and residents. Community members seeking more information or assistance are encouraged to stay tuned to Dallas Fire-Rescue updates and local news channels.
