While it might not be the extension Green Bay Packers fans have been eagerly anticipating all summer, general manager Brian Gutekunst has secured a key defensive player just before the start of training camp.

The Packers have signed defensive tackle Kenny Clark to a three-year, $64 million extension, which includes a $17.5 million signing bonus, according to a source confirmed by PackersNews. Clark, now 29, was entering the final year of his contract, making it likely that 2024 could have been his last season with the team. Instead, this extension ensures Clark will stay with the Packers through the 2027 season.

First reported by NFL Network on Sunday, Clark's extension includes a substantial payout of $29 million in 2024. His new deal, averaging $21.3 million annually, ranks 12th among NFL defensive tackles in terms of yearly salary. When factoring in the remaining $17 million from his previous contract, his total annual salary over the next four seasons ranks 14th.

Before the extension, Clark's annual salary was the 16th highest at his position.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Clark is coming off arguably his best season in 2023. In the Packers' 3-4 defensive scheme, he played more frequently as a three-tech defensive tackle rather than a nose tackle, achieving a career-high 7.5 sacks and adding another half sack in the playoffs. His 44.5 total pressures represent elite production for an interior lineman.

Entering 2024, the Packers have bolstered their defensive line depth around Clark more than ever before, with players like 2022 first-round pick Devonte Wyatt and reliable run defender T.J. Slaton. Clark, originally a first-round pick in 2016, remains the undeniable leader of the defensive line, now poised to lead the Packers' defense into the future.
